Each of these instanced versions of the world will be unique in the fact that objects that have been interacted with, including random objects with physics properties but no gameplay importance, will remain in their altered states from player visits.
These linkbooks will be each player's instance of the puzzle worlds included with Uru Live.

Not only will this personal space hold items found across the various worlds, but also the all important bookcase full of linkbooks.
For instance, one page will plant a tree that will grow over time. Some of these objects will come in the form of book pages that when added to the island home's linkbook will cause changes. These personal spaces can be changed by players by adding objects to it. These island areas will act as a hub and home. Each character will gain a space of their own within the MMO where only players that are invited there will be able to visit. Players will collect books and pages of books in order to access new areas and items for their characters. While there will be a little bit of overlap between the old Myst worlds and the new most of what players find will be specially created for Uru Live. As players find more of the story, they'll be introduced to new linkbooks that lead to new worlds and puzzles. These dribbles of story will touch a few players and spread virally for a while before the information is eventually released over broadcast to others that might have missed the content. Part of the mystery of the world will be in the conversations with real people and how much to believe. Some of the story hints and clues will be obvious to players but Cyan has hired players and actors to interact in the city and world as normal players while dropping story bombs on unsuspecting players. YES NO What's more interesting is that much of the story, a plotline that's being planned to last for years, will take place within the confines of the city. This is the only part of the game that won't be instanced and where players will be able to meet, chat, and discuss the happenings of the game world. In fact, much of the game, the MMO part actually, takes place in "real-world" city. Uru Live will be a juxtaposition of the modern world that we know here on Earth and the often alien fiction that made Myst so memorable. In this world, the powerful linkbooks that created new realms of fantasy are part of an underground culture. While the specific story of the Myst has finished, the fiction lives on in Uru. Now, Cyan is going to have to think hard about new locations and puzzles that actively involve more than one individual. Adventures have in the past been completely focused on single player experiences. The idea of a traditional graphic adventure game in the massively multiplayer space is an interesting one. Instead of number crunching role-playing mechanics, players will survive inside of a world filled with fiction and logic puzzles that can be solved both alone and with friends.Īfter seeing the game again recently, it seems to be in pretty good shape.
This is a new way to look at massively multiplayer online games. While Uru is still in beta, it's clear that Cyan hasn't cut back any of their adventure. Myst Online: Uru Live has had one hell of a rocky development but was picked up out of the dust of cancellation and given new life at GameTap as one of their exclusive products included in their monthly service fee. This particular game wasn't to be a single player experience, but one that could be shared with friends and family inside of the game space. Meanwhile, in the background, Cyan was creating a new kind of Myst experience based on their spin-off game Uru.

But with the creation of Myst V, the series and story that fans had been following for years ended. The game's challenging puzzles (brazenly obtuse in Riven's case) along with the absolutely unique fiction and visually creative environments have been the large contributing factors to that success.
